30 minutes by car, Vizille Castle is in an 100 hectare estate and contains the Museum
of the French Revolution. The estate also has rose gardens, a pony ring, a mini-train,
and a wildlife park.
Grenoble is only a 50 minute drive away and is the main city of the region of Isere.
As well as shopping, eating out, and all the other things you could expect to do
in a big city there are 19th century fortifications where you can get a great view
of the city which can be accessed by cable car.
For over 400 years, the Chartreuse Cellars in Voiron have closely guarded their secret
recipe of 135 plants. It is the world's largest liqueur cellar and where the Carthusian
monks' alcoholic drink 'Chartreuse' is aged. The production of the liqueur is the
main occupation of the monastic order and its recipe is known only to the monks.
If you are looking to take it easier during your stay (or were wondering what you
could do whilst your other half was off cycling!) then there are lots of places to
visit when sightseeing in the Isere region of France. Just up the road, around 8
km away is the picturesque mountain village of Venosc. Its small winding streets
are steeply sloped and have a number of small artisan shops selling locally made
gifts, as well as restaurants and a bar. There is also a cable car link up to the
ski resort of Les Deux Alpes, which has plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. If
you are feeling full of energy you can always walk up rather than take the cable
car!
