After seeing a few articles pop up on various sites, I’ve decided to give some money to a complete stranger. Well, I don’t know the guy personally, but I’ve read his book, Rough Ride a number of times. The ‘guy’ is Paul Kimmage, and for those of you who don’t know, he’s an ex-pro cyclist who ended his career and then wrote a book in order to expose the level of doping that was (and perhaps still is) prevalent in cycling. This is a kind of tough subject for someone who loves cycling, and following the release of the book Paul was pretty much ostracised by everyone in the business of cycling. He’s now a reporter and is known for asking the toughest questions on doping…including pointing the finger at cycling’s governing body, the UCI. Well they (and former president Hein Verbruggen) have decided to sue Paul for an article he wrote implying that they are also at fault for the state of cycling (they are not going after the paper he worked for at the time, or anybody else who ran the story, just him). As my personal opinion is that the UCI is actually in on the whole Lance Armstrong thing, and that this lawsuit boils down to bullying tactics, I’ve decided to support Paul with a donation via a support fund that has been set up (Paul is currently unemployed, and no match for an international body like the UCI when it comes to paying for a good lawyer). If you’d like to learn more about this you can check out this article on CyclingNews http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/kimmage-humbled-by-defense-fund-support or actually contribute via the link at the end of this article: http://nyvelocity.com/content/features/2012/paul-kimmage-defense-fund.
